Abstract
Purpose To review literature examining the factors that determine magnetic resonance (MR) compatibility of electronic implants and wearable devices, including device materials, engineering design, regulatory approval processes, and clinical monitoring requirements.
Method An integrative literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed literature addressing MR safety and device compatibility. Databases searched included PubMed, Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Studies were selected based on relevance to MR safety classifications, device design considerations, regulatory labeling, and monitoring requirements.
Results The literature demonstrated that MR compatible devices are engineered and tested to meet regulatory safety standards and approved for use under specific scanning conditions. In contrast, many wearable devices lack standardized MR safety evaluation and are classified as MR unsafe. MR conditional devices require structured monitoring and adherence to magnetic field strength and specific absorption rate limitations.
Discussion Across the reviewed studies, MR compatibility was influenced by device engineering, material composition, regulatory oversight, and manufacturer-defined scanning conditions. Devices that undergo regulatory testing and receive MR safety labeling are associated with defined imaging protocols and monitoring requirements, whereas devices lacking such evaluation introduce uncertainty in clinical screening.
Conclusion MR safety decisions depend on device design, regulatory labeling, and adherence to monitoring protocols. Continued research on wearable technologies and improved transparency in MR safety labeling may reduce uncertainty in clinical practice and support safe imaging of patients with electronic devices.
