Abstract
Purpose To examine the impact of fast magnetic resonance (MR) protocols on sedation requirements, patient tolerance, workflow efficiency, and diagnostic accuracy in musculoskeletal and brain imaging.
Method An integrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar to identify peer-reviewed, original research articles published between 2019 and 2026. Studies were selected for relevance, human subjects, and outcomes related to sedation, patient experience, or diagnostic effectiveness.
Results Fast MR protocols were consistently associated with reduced sedation use, improved patient comfort, and increased exam completion rates. Workflow efficiency improved due to shorter scan times. Although minor reductions in image quality were noted, diagnostic accuracy remained acceptable.
Discussion Shorter scan times appear to reduce patient anxiety and procedural risk particularly in pediatric populations where sedation is often required, while simultaneously improving departmental efficiency through increased throughput and reduced resource utilization. Taken together, these findings suggested that fast MR protocols offer both patient-centered and system-level benefits, supporting their broader clinical adoption. However, variability in study populations, imaging protocols, and outcome measures limit the generalizability of these results and indicate a need for standardized approaches and further research across diverse clinical settings.
Conclusion Fast MR protocols effectively reduced sedation and improved patient experience without compromising diagnostic accuracy. Future research should standardize protocols and evaluate broader populations.
