Biographical Note:
Jordan Gutterman, MD, received his BA from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He did his internship, residency, and a fellowship at the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Gutterman served two years in the US Army as Chief of Hematology-Oncology at Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas. He joined the Department of Developmental Therapeutics at MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1971 after completing his military service.
Dr. Gutterman was the first MD Anderson faculty member appointed to the Virginia H. Cockrell Distinguished Professorship in Immunology. He continues to hold the appointment in emeritus status. Dr. Gutterman was the co-recipient, with his colleague Dr. Hans Strander, of the 1992 Milstein Award from the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research (ISICR). He has held numerous committee appointments with leading national cancer and medical organizations, including the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, the Institute of Medicine, and the Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Gutterman serves as Professor and Section Chief, Department of Systems Biology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas.
Interview Abstract:
The interview of Dr. Jordan Gutterman provides a firsthand account of the development of interferon for use in cancer treatment, including the researchers who played critical roles in key discoveries. In discussing his work on interferon, Dr. Gutterman describes how Mary Lasker of the Lasker Foundation designed a successful strategy to obtain the needed funding for the costly research. Dr. Gutterman also explains the origins of the Interferon Foundation, created by Mr. and Mrs. Leon Davis and Roy Huffington. Throughout the interview, Dr. Gutterman describes the science upon which the interferon discoveries were based, as well as his research protocols and philosophy.
