Description

Artist: Andrew Burkhardt

Materials: Crane cable, wood, bone, brass shavings

"The blade has been hand forged from a crane cable. I got the cable from a crane maintenance company that was about to sell it off for recycling. The cable was forged welded by hand and then shaped at the anvil into the knife. After heat treating it was sanded and was etched in ferric chloride to bring out the strands you see in the steel.

The handle is a mix of reclaimed wood, bone, and epoxy mixed with brass shavings. The wood has been cast in epoxy to fill in the cracks and is from a tree we removed near the Mays building, I have been drying the wood a couple years, and was excited to use these pieces with the knots in them. I like that part of the knife is tied to a physical aspect of MD Anderson.

There are some flaws in the handle from the forging and some aspects of the handle, these flaws were aspects related to the products used and point to some of the uniqueness of a hand made knife from previous used materials."
